چکیده

The manipulation of objects held in a robotic hand or gripper is accompanied by events such as making and breaking contact and slippage, between the fingertips and the grasped object and between the grasped object and external surfaces. Humans can distinguish among such events, in part, because they excite the various mechanoreceptors in the hands differently. As part of an effort to provide robots with a similar capability, we propose two features that can be extracted from dynamic tactile array data and used to discriminate between hand/object and object/world slips. Both features rely on examining how slippage affects an array of dynamic tactile sensors compared to the way it affects individual elements of the array. In comparison to approaches that require extensive training with particular combinations of objects and skin, the features work for a wide range of frequencies and grasp conditions. The performance and generalizability of the features are verified with testing on three different kinds of sensors and for a range of object textures, grasp forces and slip conditions. Both features demonstrate greater than 85% accuracy in identifying the location of slip.

Slip Detection and Classification for Grip Control using Multiple Sensory Modalities on a Biomimetic Tactile Sensor

Achieving human-level performance in dexterous grasping tasks will likely require richer tactile sensing than is currently available [1]. Recently, biomimetic tactile sensors, designed to provide more humanlike capabilities, have been developed. These new sensors provide an opportunity to significantly improve the robustness of robotic manipulation. In order to take full advantage of the inform...

Tactile Sensing

Touch Sensing This is the detection and measurement of a contact force at a defined point. A touch sensor can also be restricted to binary information, namely touch, and no touch. Tactile Sensing This is the detection and measurement of the spatial distribution of forces perpendicular to a predetermined sensory area, and the subsequent interpretation of the spatial information. A tactile-sensin...

Using a Piezo-Resistive Tactile Sensor for Detection of Incipient Slippage

The detection of incipient slip is an important cornerstone in tactile based grasping. In this paper, we present an approach to detect incipient slip using a fast piezo-resistive, yet static tactile sensor pad. Our approach renders special slip sensors obsolete and therefore enables static and dynamic sensing with one sensing mechanism. For the detection of the slip, a fast fourier transform is...

Internal representation of slip for a soft finger with vision and tactile sensors

To build an adaptive autonomous robot, it must have a certain number of external sensors to observe the environment. One physical phenomenon is observed as sensor signal flows through these sensors. In this paper, we focus on a “slip” phenomenon and try to build up a network representation of slip of an anthropomorphic robot hand. A robot hand with distributed tactile sensors and a vision senso...

A dynamic tactile sensor on photoelastic effect

Certain photoelastic materials exhibit birefringent characteristics at a very low level of strain. This property of material may be suitable for dynamic or wave propagation studies, which can be exploited for designing tactile sensors. This paper presents the design, construction and testing of a novel dynamic sensor based on photoelastic effect, which is capable of detecting object slip as wel...
